Ketamine Therapy FAQs

Find answers to the most frequently asked questions about ketamine therapy.

Ketamine is a dissociative anesthetic that has been used for decades in medical settings for anesthesia and pain management. It’s also gaining recognition for its off-label use in treating certain mental health conditions, particularly treatment-resistant depression, anxiety disorders, PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder), and chronic pain syndromes.

Ketamine primarily blocks NMDA receptors in the brain, which are involved in the regulation of synaptic plasticity and learning. This action is thought to contribute to its antidepressant and analgesic effects.

When administered under medical supervision in a controlled setting, ketamine is generally considered safe. However, like any medication, it carries potential risks and requires careful monitoring by trained healthcare professionals.

Those with treatment-resistant depression, anxiety, PTSD, chronic pain, and other conditions.

Patients typically experience rapid relief of symptoms, with sessions conducted in a calm, supportive environment.

1. Rapid Relief:
IV ketamine therapy often provides quicker symptom relief compared to traditional treatments, especially for conditions like depression, anxiety, PTSD, and chronic pain.

2. Effectiveness for Treatment-Resistant Conditions:
Ketamine has shown significant success in patients who have not responded to other treatments, offering new hope where other therapies have fallen short.

3. Neurodegenerative Benefits:
Ketamine stimulates the growth of new neural connections in the brain, promoting healing and resilience, particularly in mental health conditions.

4. Customizable Treatment:
Dosages and protocols can be tailored to each patient’s unique needs, ensuring a personalized and effective approach.

5. Minimally Invasive:
IV administration is a safe and straightforward procedure performed in a controlled clinical setting.

6. Potential to Reduce Dependence on Medications:
Many patients experience reduced reliance on traditional antidepressants or pain medications after undergoing ketamine therapy.

7. Safe and Well-Studied:
Backed by extensive research, ketamine therapy is recognized for its safety and efficacy when administered by experienced professionals.

8. Improves Overall Quality of Life:
Patients often report improvements in mood, energy levels, sleep quality, and overall functioning after treatment.

Common side effects of ketamine therapy include dissociation (feeling disconnected from reality), dizziness, nausea, and changes in blood pressure or heart rate. These effects are usually temporary and subside after the infusion ends.

Generally, ketamine infusion is not covered by insurance. However, you can use a Health Savings Account (HSA) to cover the costs. Please consult with your HSA provider for more detail.

The Treatment Process

Assessment: The process begins with an initial consultation over video chat with Dr. Deroee. For mental health, an initial referral from your mental health care provider (your psychiatrist or other qualified medical professional) is required and needs to be received by our center before your initial consultation. Patients with chronic pain do not need a referral. During this consultation, your medical history, current symptoms, and previous treatment experiences will be discussed.

Evaluation: Dr. Deroee evaluates whether you are a suitable candidate for ketamine therapy based on your condition and medical history. The potential risks, benefits, and expectations of treatment will be discussed and all your questions will be answers as you and Dr. Deroee are going to evaluate the options for your treatment plan.

Medical Clearance: Before starting ketamine therapy, medical clearance may be required to ensure that there are no underlying medical conditions or contraindications that could affect your treatment.

Education: You will receive information about what to expect during the treatment sessions, including possible side effects and how to manage them.

Administration: Ketamine is typically administered in a controlled clinical setting. The method of administration is Intravenous (IV) Infusion, an efficient and precise approach where ketamine is delivered directly into the bloodstream through a vein in the arm. This method allows the physician to adjust the dosage in real-time, ensuring the treatment is personalized to each patient’s unique needs. Each session generally takes about 45 to 60 minutes.
This highlights both the efficiency and the adaptability of IV ketamine therapy.

Monitoring: Throughout the infusion or administration, you are going to be monitored to ensure your safety and comfort. Your vital signs (blood pressure, heart rate, etc.) may be checked.

Observation: After the ketamine session, you are going to be monitored for a period to ensure there are no immediate adverse effects and to assess your response to the treatment.

Support: Clinics often provide a supportive environment post- treatment to help manage any lingering effects such as dissociation or dizziness.

Follow-Up: Regular over the phone follow-up appointments are scheduled to monitor your progress, adjust treatment as needed, and provide ongoing support. We are going to be in touch with your mental health provider in regards to the progress.

Maintenance Therapy: Some patients may require ongoing or periodic ketamine treatments to maintain their therapeutic benefits.
